Declarative and programmatic transaction management:
In Spring Boot, transaction management can be handled using two approaches: declarative transaction management and programmatic transaction management. Lets understand the differences between these two approaches:
Declarative Transaction Management:
Declarative transaction management is the preferred and more commonly used approach in Spring Boot. It allows you to manage transactions declaratively using annotations or XML configuration without explicitly writing transaction management code. @Transactional to define transactional behavior. The underlying framework, such as Springs transaction management infrastructure, takes care of starting, committing, and rolling back transactions based on the specified attributes and the surrounding context.
Declarative transaction management provides a higher level of abstraction and simplifies transaction handling, making the code more concise and readable. It promotes separation of concerns by separating transactional concerns from business logic.
Programmatic Transaction Management:
Programmatic transaction management involves explicitly writing code to manage transactions using transaction APIs provided by the underlying transaction management framework, such as JDBC or JTA.
In programmatic transaction management, you manually begin, commit, or rollback transactions using transaction management APIs within your code. You have fine-grained control over the transactional boundaries and can handle complex transactional scenarios.
While programmatic transaction management offers more control and flexibility, it requires more code and can make the code more verbose and harder to maintain compared to declarative transaction management.
In Spring Boot, declarative transaction management with
@Transactional is the recommended and widely adopted approach for managing transactions. It offers a simpler and more elegant way to handle transactions, reduces boilerplate code, and provides better separation of concerns.
However, in certain cases where you require fine-grained control or need to work with specific transaction APIs, programmatic transaction management may be more appropriate. It allows you to programmatically manage transactions using the underlying transaction management APIs.
Its important to note that Spring Boot still provides support for programmatic transaction management if needed, but the declarative approach is the preferred choice for most applications.
